Iraq at the FIFA World Cup 2026
- FIFA ranking: 57
- Group: I
- Confederation: AFC
- Coach: Graham Arnold
- World Cup titles: 0
- Best result: Group stage (1986)
History
Iraq's only previous FIFA World Cup appearance before 2026 was at the 1986 tournament in Mexico, where they were eliminated in the group stage, losing all three matches against Mexico, Paraguay, and Belgium, scoring just one goal. That campaign ended a long wait for Arab football to feature at the top table, and it was followed by a 40-year absence from the World Cup finals. Iraq has been a dominant force in Asian football at other levels, winning the AFC Asian Cup in 2007. The 2026 World Cup represents their long-awaited return to the tournament after four decades.
Qualification
Iraq progressed through the AFC qualifying rounds, eventually reaching the fifth round where they defeated the United Arab Emirates 3-2 on aggregate in November 2025 to advance to the inter-confederation playoffs. In the playoff final in Monterrey, Mexico on April 1, 2026, Iraq defeated Bolivia 2-1 to become the 48th and final team to qualify for the tournament. Ali al-Hamadi opened the scoring in the 10th minute, Bolivia levelled through Moises Paniagua, before Aymen Hussein scored the winner in the 53rd minute. Head coach Graham Arnold, the former Australia national team manager, was appointed in May 2025 and guided Iraq through the playoff stage.
Preparation
Iraq were eliminated in the group stage after losing all three matches: 1-4 to Norway (June 16), 3-0 to France (June 22), and 5-0 to Senegal (June 26). Against Senegal, defender Rebin Sulaka was sent off in the 13th minute after VAR upgraded a yellow card for denying Mane a clear goal, leaving Iraq with ten men for over 75 minutes. Strikers Aymen Hussein (adductor injury) and Mohannad Ali (undisclosed training injury) both missed the Senegal match. Iraq finished bottom of Group I with 0 points, 1 goal scored, and 12 conceded (-11 GD). It was their first World Cup since 1986.
