Jordan at the FIFA World Cup 2026

History

The 2026 FIFA World Cup marks Jordan's first-ever appearance at the tournament. The country has never previously qualified for a World Cup finals, making this a historic debut for Jordanian football. Jordan's national team, known as Al Nashama (The Chivalrous Ones), has gradually grown in stature within Asian football over the past decade. They reached the final of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, losing to Qatar, which represented their best result at a senior continental championship and signalled their emergence as a genuine force in the AFC region. The 2026 qualification is the culmination of sustained development in the national programme.

Qualification

Jordan qualified for the 2026 World Cup through the AFC qualification process, finishing second in Third Round Group B behind South Korea. They progressed to the Third Round after topping their Second Round group, which included a notable away victory over Saudi Arabia. In the Third Round, Jordan went unbeaten across eight matches, recording four wins and four draws. The decisive moment came on June 5, 2025, when a 3-0 away victory over Oman secured their historic first World Cup berth. Jordan also became the first Arab nation to officially qualify for the 2026 edition. Coach Jamal Sellami, a Moroccan who took charge in mid-2024, oversaw the final qualification push.

Preparation

Coach Jamal Sellami named a preliminary squad of 30 players in May 2026 ahead of Jordan's final preparation block, which is being trimmed to a 26-man final list. The squad is built around key players including Mousa Tamari and Yazan Al-Arab. Jordan opened their pre-tournament programme with a friendly against Switzerland on 31 May in St. Gallen, losing 4-1 (Odeh Fakhoury with Jordan's goal) in a heavy workout against a higher-ranked side. After the match the team flew to the United States for a second training camp in San Diego running 1-10 June, where they face Colombia in a friendly on 7 June at Snapdragon Stadium. Jordan then move to their official World Cup base camp in Portland, Oregon, ahead of their opening match against Austria on 17 June. Sellami previously guided Morocco's local-national team to the 2018 African Nations Championship and brings experience from club management in Moroccan football. Jordan approach their debut with ambition, having demonstrated the ability to hold strong opponents across their qualifying campaign.
