Jordan at the FIFA World Cup 2026

History

The 2026 FIFA World Cup marks Jordan's first-ever appearance at the tournament. The country has never previously qualified for a World Cup finals, making this a historic debut for Jordanian football. Jordan's national team, known as Al Nashama (The Chivalrous Ones), has gradually grown in stature within Asian football over the past decade. They reached the final of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, losing to Qatar, which represented their best result at a senior continental championship and signalled their emergence as a genuine force in the AFC region. The 2026 qualification is the culmination of sustained development in the national programme.

Qualification

Jordan qualified for the 2026 World Cup through the AFC qualification process, finishing second in Third Round Group B behind South Korea. They progressed to the Third Round after topping their Second Round group, which included a notable away victory over Saudi Arabia. In the Third Round, Jordan went unbeaten across eight matches, recording four wins and four draws. The decisive moment came on June 5, 2025, when a 3-0 away victory over Oman secured their historic first World Cup berth. Jordan also became the first Arab nation to officially qualify for the 2026 edition. Coach Jamal Sellami, a Moroccan who took charge in mid-2024, oversaw the final qualification push.

Preparation

Jordan's historic debut World Cup concluded on 27 June 2026 with a 1-3 defeat to Argentina at AT&T Stadium, Arlington. They finished bottom of Group J with zero points from three matches (1-3 vs Austria, 1-2 vs Algeria, 1-3 vs Argentina), but notably scored in every game. Mousa Al-Tamari netted against Argentina, with Olwan's equaliser vs Austria and Al-Rashdan's opener vs Algeria rounding out Jordan's three World Cup goals. Coach Sellami: 'We are out of the competition while feeling very proud of what we have presented as debutants.' On 5 July 2026, a week after the exit, the JFA confirmed Sellami's tenure had ended; no successor has been named.
